Fatal I-485 crash leads to new initiative by NC troopers

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers are launching a new initiative to go after dangerous drivers on the Interstate 485 loop.

The campaign comes after a late-July crash on the highway west of the airport that killed six people.

If you haven't already, expect to see a greater law enforcement presence on the interstates. The campaign is called "I-485 Alive" and is aimed at reducing the number of fatal crashes.

"A lot of people texting, speeding, not staying in their lanes," said one man about his experience driving on Charlotte-area interstates. "Just not paying attention and just cause big accidents and here lately, that's what's happened."

The most notable was a July 26 crash on I-485 near the Dixie River Road overpass involving three vehicles. It killed six people ranging from 1 to 27 years old.

"We're really taking an active approach to make sure fatal crashes like this don't happen in the future," said First Sgt. Chris Knox with NCSHP.

In the aftermath of the fatal crash, troopers are partnering with officers and deputies. They're increasing patrols in the area, enforcing traffic laws and promoting safe driving for 90 days.

"Ultimately, if we go out there during this campaign and write no tickets but have no fatal crashes, it's been a success," said Knox.

Troopers said they get a lot of complaints about I-485, and many of the wrecks they see have the same causes.

"We know that these fatal crashes are happening because of inattention," said Knox. "We know they're happening because of people's speed and not adhering to the speed limit. We know the severity of these crashes are only greatened because people aren't wearing seat belts."

The most recent state data from 2023 shows that of the more than 1,600 people killed in crashes, 23 percent of the deaths were related to speeding.

"For any new drivers out there that's just getting a car or just getting their license, just remember that you're not just driving for yourself. You're driving for other people on the roads," said one man.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the deadly I-485 crash. Investigators have not yet said what caused it.
