ActorJared Padalecki is open to playing his beloved character Sam Winchester again in a possible Supernatural reboot.
Collider reported that Padalecki shared he would be interested in reprising the role of the demon hunter during the August 2025 Fan Expo Boston. He noted that he and his castmate, Jensen Ackles, who played Sam's older brother Dean Winchester, starred in the series for 15 years until its final season, which aired in 2020.
“I’m so proud of what the show was, what we were able to do in 15 short years [Laughs]. I would absolutely love to ride again. We’d need some hair dye for our beards. They’re a little salt and peppery now, but I’d love to get back in that car, roll cameras, and have Dean (Ackles) call me Sam again," said Padalecki.
According to Collider, the actor clarified he would only be interested in filming a limited series, like the 2016 four-episode Gilmore Girls reboots during a June 2024 episode of the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast. As fans are aware, Padalecki returned to play his Gilmore Girls character Dean Forester, who was Rory Gilmore's (Alexis Bledel) first boyfriend, for said reboot.
“I will say this. I don’t want to do another 15 years of Supernatural. I don’t want to do another 5 years of Supernatural, I am dying to do a reboot of Supernatural. Akin to the Gilmore Girls reboot," said Padalecki during the podcast episode. "Here are four one-and-a-half-hour episodes. We’ll shoot it in three months. I thinkJensen [Ackles] and I both said in 2020, ‘We’d love to revisit these characters, this world. Give us five years.’ Which is next year. And I see him often. And we talk often. I think he and I are both really eager to do it. I’m certain I’ll put the flannel on again and play Sam Winchester.”
While speaking to Collider in June 2025, Ackles also shared he would be interested in playing Dean again. However, he's not able to do so because he's been filming the Amazon Prime series The Boys, its prequel, Vought Rising, and Countdown.
“Well, it sounds like Amazon’s going to have to come up with an idea on that one, because they’re controlling my schedule right now,” said Ackles to the publication. “But look, we’ve talked about our love for the show. We continue to talk about it. We continue to do conventions and fan appearances and stuff, and talk about it. I feel like it’s one of those things where, if it happens, then let’s go.”
He also noted that he, Padalecki, and Misha Collins, who played angel Castiel on Supernatural, had an on-screen reunion for the upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys, created by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.
