A suspect was indicted in the cold case murder of Trudy Appleby, an 11-year-old girl whose disappearance shocked the northeast Illinois community of Moline nearly 30 years ago.
Jamison Fisher, 50, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in Henry County, which is east of Moline, reported KWQC, the NBC affiliate in the Quad Cities.
“The arrest of Fisher marks a turning point in this mystery that has spanned nearly three decades,” Moline Police Chief Darren Gault said at a news conference Thursday. “While nothing can bring back young Trudy to her family, the relentless pursuit of justice honors her memory and the unwavering support of her loved ones and our community. The Moline Police Department is committed to seeking the truth for Trudy and her family and to ensure that justice is served.”
Fisher will remain in custody in Scott County, Iowa, where he has been jailed on a probation violation in an unrelated case, authorities said.
In 2022, Fisher was one of two men named suspects in the case.
At the time, authorities said they believed Trudy had been sexually assaulted, killed and dumped somewhere.
Trudy was last seen near her home on Aug. 21, 1996, getting into the passenger side of an older model gray-colored vehicle with a man, police said. Trudy may have asked to go swimming with a friend at Campbell’s Island along the Mississippi River, but her father said no. Phone records from that day indicated she may have gone, police stated.
Authorities alleged Fisher killed Trudy in Henry County, though her body has never been recovered.
At annual vigil on the anniversary of Trudy’s disappearance last year, police hinted they would soon be closing in.
“The people that are involved, that are alive, they know we’re coming,” Det. Michael Griffin of the East Moline Police Dept. said at the time. “We’re not giving up, and this isn’t going away.”
