The Honda Center will keep its name when it hosts volleyball during the 2028 Olympics in what will be the first games to allow venue sponsors, LA28 officials announced Thursday, Aug. 14.
The Honda Center was originally going to go by the Arena in Anaheim during the international competition because the Olympics have in the past not allowed naming rights at competition venues.
Instead, for the 2028 Summer Olympics, officials said they will allow current naming rights sponsors to keep their venue names and will sell naming rights for temporary venues.
“Anaheim’s arena will be the first in Olympic history to be known by its actual name,” Mayor Ashleigh Aitken said. “It’s a thrill to showcase the world-class Honda Center and share it with fans from around the world on the Olympic global stage.”
Nineteen temporary venues that will be used could also get corporate sponsors. It’ll help the Olympics bring in more revenue in what LA28 called a “landmark change.”
The Honda Center is the first venue to keep its name during the games. Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios is the first temporary venue that has a sponsor and was also announced Thursday. More naming rights sponsors are expected, according to a news release.
Mike Lyster, a spokesperson for Anaheim, said the venue keeping its name during the games has a few practical benefits.
Signs around the city telling drivers where the Honda Center is won’t have to be updated and none of the Honda signs will need to be covered, he said.
The Arena in Anaheim name would have also been a bit confusing since there’s already an Anaheim Arena at the convention center.
The Honda Center opened in 1993 and is owned by the city. LA28 officials announced in April that it had been selected to host indoor volleyball.
