While Mars didn't say they would outright remove synthetic dyes from their products, the company did announce that they would release variants of Skittles, M&Ms, Starbursts, and Extra Gum that are made with natural dyes, Food Divereports. The company isn't quite embracing a full-scale change yet, primarily because it's not totally feasible yet. Natural dyes are in comparatively shorter supply, and it's unclear how switching to natural dyes would affect the products customers have gotten so accustomed to. Will it make the candy more expensive? Will it affect the taste? Will the product stay fresh for as long?
Mars first announced their intention to move away from synthetic dyes back in 2016, with the goal of completing the transition by 2021. While the company followed through for its dinnertime foods, but stopped short when it came to candy. “For treats...we found that many of our consumers across the world do not, in fact, find artificial colors to be ingredients of concern,” it says in a section of their website dedicated to artificial dyes.
