Yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms have been issued for parts of the UK as the fourth heatwave of the summer continues.
The weather warnings cover north-eastern Scotland and the eastern part of Northern Ireland.
In Scotland, in a separate the forecaster predicted that up to 70mm of rain could fall in two hours, while 50mm is set to fall in Northern Ireland.
Residents affected by both alerts – due to stay in place until 10pm on Thursday night – may experience power cuts and the possibility of deep floodwater, “causing a danger to life”, the Met Office said.
Flood alerts have also been issued for Scotland, where the Scottish Environment Protection Agency is warning of a risk of significant flooding from surface water and rivers.
Other parts of the country were expected to experience temperatures of around 30°C again on Thursday, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) extending heat warnings into next week for much of England.

— Met Office (@metoffice) August 14, 2025All of southern England, the Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber have been issued a yellow heat alert until Monday, as the UKHSA said the hot weather may result in a rise in deaths, “particularly among those ages 65 and over or with health conditions”.
Despite wet conditions in some parts of the country on Thursday, officials have said England is suffering from a “nationally significant” water shortfall.
The Met Office said this “spell of hot weather is part of a broader heatwave event”, but that the heat was now “giving way to increasing instability”, adding to the risk of thunderstorms.
The Chief Meteorologist with the forecaster, Paul Gundersen, said: “Some areas will continue to experience their fourth heatwave of the summer so far, with Thursday remaining warm or very warm for many, though cooler near coasts.
