Cubs Pitcher Rehab Notes: Taillon and Soroka

The Chicago Cubs have already gotten Javier Assad back at long last, and they’ll soon get back another starting pitcher, with yet another somewhere on the horizon.

The news on Jameson Taillon is simple and good: his latest rehab start went perfectly fine, and he’s ready to come back to the big league rotation.

We should expect to see Jameson Taillon return to the big league rotation next week for the Brewers series, which is particularly good timing given that it’s 5 games in 4 days. The Cubs were going to need an extra starting pitcher anyway.

As far as the roster implications go, well, they get a free player on the double-header day, so they might just use that one and see what happens in terms of player health/usage at that point. Keep in mind, the Cubs also get an extra pitcher roster spot on September 1, so they might just option someone down next week whom they expect to bring back a couple weeks later. There’s actually a lot of flexibility coming.

Speaking of which, at some point in September they could be getting Mike Soroka back, too.

Soroka, the Cubs’ sole starting pitching acquisition at the Trade Deadline, lasted just two innings in his Cubs debut before being shut down with the shoulder strain. The good news is that he’s already set to start playing catch today, per the Sun-Times, and is apparently already seeing progress.

“It’s feeling really good,” Soroka said. “We’re doing good things to make it progress. Just got to keep on that track and we’ll be back …. It’s about pushing things when they feel good. We talked about that with the staff, and how we’re going to be able to handle this, and what’s a safe way to do it while also ensuring that when we’re back, I’m the guy that they traded for. I think everybody would rather we take a day or two extra and make sure that everything is in a good place, so that when we are back, they get to see that guy.”

It may well be the case that, when Soroka does come back, it’s in a multi-inning relief role. That may not be precisely what folks were thinking the Cubs would acquire at the deadline, but it’d hardly be a bad thing. Don’t forget, Soroka was a stud last year when pitching in relief, and guys like that can become all the more valuable in the postseason.

For now, we’ll just wait patiently to see how he feels as he throws. I wouldn’t expect him to be back on the mound doing bullpen work for a while yet, and competitive action is still a ways off. If the Cubs got him back in the first half of September, that’d be a pretty outstanding turnaround. So far, so good.
