Jeff Probst Is Embarrassed by This Outdated Survivor Rule

LongtimeSurvivor host Jeff Probst can admit when he's wrong. The legendary reality TV star has long criticized former competitors from competing on other shows, but on August 13, 2025, he changed his tune about his controversial unspoken rule.

"Initially, when I saw Survivor players showing up on other shows, I was pretty vocal," he said in a new interview with Gold Derby about the upcoming season 50 of the hit competition show. "[But] now I have a different feeling."

"I'm embarrassed that I was upset about it, because I have nothing to do with it," he admitted. "Jesse Tannenbaum runs our casting team, and he's a great leader... I see why other shows would want these people. They're fascinating, they're compelling, they're great storytellers."

He also acknowledged that expecting Survivor players to never appear on other shows means he's preventing them from making a living from their new stardom. "If you're a former Survivor player and another show will pay you to come do their show, absolutely go make that money because you're entertaining," he said. "They're smart to want you."

Probst has been outspoken about not wanting contestants to appear on other shows in the past. Most recently, during a Survivor CBS panel event in February 2025, he admitted he gets "a little territorial" over their contestants and that it feels like other shows "just wait for" Survivor to find great people and then steal their most popular players, and "it has bothered" him in the past.

"It's vicious, it's tough, man," he said. "You gotta keep the show good, you gotta be ahead of everybody else.... If you look at it from our point of view, we might have a returning player season in store and we're like 'now you're going to go do this show and that show and it's not quite as special now to see you [on Survivor].'" At the time, he said he was "working on" not being as bothered by it.

‘Survivor’ Alumni Who Have Competed on Other Reality Shows

Survivor players do have a long history of appearing on other shows, regardless of Probst's feelings about it. Many legends, including Rupert Boneham and Boston Rob and Amber Mariano have appeared on The Amazing Race, while others, like Jay Starrett and Natalie Anderson, have competed on The Challenge.

Most recently, many Survivor alumni have been showing up on NBC's hit show The Traitors, including Boston Rob, Carolyn Wiger, Tony Vlachos, Jeremy Collins, Parvati Shallow, Sandra Diaz-Twine, and Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick. Three more players are set to appear on Traitors season 4: Anderson, Yam Yam Arocho, and Rob Cesternino

Legendary Survivor player Cirie Fields even won the competition show's first season, which Probst acknowledged. "It doesn't bother me with Cirie. Cirie is hall of fame," he said in February. "Cirie can do whatever she wants."

Probst promised that appearing on the other show wouldn't hurt anyone's chances of being invited back to Survivor in future seasons. "Just because somebody goes and plays Traitors doesn't mean they can't come back and play Survivor," he said. And that appears to be true, because the cast of the upcomingSurvivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans season includes LaGrossa Kendrick and Fields.

Survivor 50 is set to premiere in 2026.
