Clashes erupted between Syrian Ministry of Defense forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria, in the early hours of Thursday morning, August 14, coinciding with the fall of mortar shells inside the city.
A source in the Syrian Ministry of Defense, who spoke to Enab Baladi on condition of anonymity, said the clash along both banks of the Euphrates River was triggered by gunfire coming from SDF-controlled areas toward Syrian army positions, prompting the army to respond.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Deir Ezzor reported that the fighting, described as “intense,” was concentrated in the al-Bughayliyah area, held by the government, and al-Jeneina in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, held by the SDF.
Both sides used machine guns and RPG shells in the confrontations, wounding a fisherman near the United Nations headquarters at the Badiyat al-Sham Hotel in Deir Ezzor city, according to the correspondent. Explosions were also heard inside the city.
Additional clashes broke out between the Syrian army’s 66th Division, stationed on the banks of the Euphrates in the town of al-Dweir, and SDF fighters in the town of Gharanij on the opposite bank of the river.
As of the time of publication, neither the Syrian government nor the SDF had commented on the clashes.
SDF Fighters Captured
Meanwhile, violent clashes erupted in Gharanij, eastern Deir Ezzor, last night after unidentified gunmen captured four SDF fighters. The SDF stormed the town and engaged in fighting with some residents, leaving several civilians injured.
According to the correspondent, SDF fighters surrounded the homes of the al-Hais and al-Muhaidi families in Gharanij, but the houses were empty except for women and children.
The SDF also carried out raids and sweep operations in the towns of al-Jiya and al-Jeneina, targeting the homes of the al-Aliyan family, and brought in military reinforcements to al-Jeneina in western Deir Ezzor.
On the banks of the Euphrates in al-Bukamal, eastern Deir Ezzor, tensions rose after a civilian was killed by a sniper believed to be affiliated with the SDF on July 20, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent.
The incident sparked widespread anger among residents, leading to sporadic clashes between al-Bukamal locals and SDF fighters along both banks of the river.
Following the incident, the SDF brought in reinforcements from the Hajin area and positioned themselves among civilian homes opposite al-Bukamal, amid a heavy security alert. The SDF also shelled Wadi Ali with several rounds, causing only material damage, the correspondent reported.
The Syrian government controls the western bank of the Euphrates, while the SDF holds the eastern bank. Enab Baladi’s Deir Ezzor correspondent previously noted that the SDF fears tensions with Arab tribes in the area, as many of their members have ties with the Syrian government.
Exchange of Accusations in Rural Aleppo
Elsewhere, eastern rural Aleppo also witnessed tensions and clashes between the Syrian government and the SDF, with both sides accusing each other of ceasefire violations and provocations.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense’s Information and Communication Department said that SDF patrols attempted to infiltrate Syrian army positions in the Tell Maaz area east of Aleppo on August 12, leading to heavy clashes in which a Syrian soldier was killed.
The army responded to the sources of fire “within the rules of engagement,” thwarted the infiltration attempt, and forced the SDF fighters to retreat to their original positions, according to the Ministry.
For its part, the SDF accused government forces on August 11 of attempting to provoke its fighters, citing “suspicious” military movements in several areas, particularly Deir Hafer and its surrounding villages.
In a statement published on its official website, the SDF said government forces “continue to violate the ceasefire,” adding that while it has refrained from responding and exercised “patience,” it warned that if violations persist, it will be forced to respond on the grounds of “legitimate defense.”
