Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans rejoiced when Ravichandran Ashwin returned to the franchise. The off-spinner had spent his first seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with CSK and was part of two title runs as well.
Ashwin’s return was seen as a homecoming and perhaps even as his farewell from cricket, as he’d announce his international retirement a few weeks after joining CSK. But about 8 months later, many CSK fans have almost started to despise Ashwin.
The veteran spinner didn’t show up in IPL 2025. It was his worst season when it came to economy, and such was his performance that he featured in just 9 matches. All this after CSK bought him for Rs 9.75 crore.
During the season, Ashwin continued to release videos on his YouTube channel, which included matches he played in. Fans weren’t pleased. And following the backlash, Ashwin stopped posting content related to CSK for the remainder of IPL 2025.

Well, Ashwin’s under scrutiny by CSK fans again. In a recent video, the offie revealed how Dewald Brevis joined the franchise as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. Ashwin shared that other franchises had shown interest in getting Brevis. CSK guaranteed to pay Brevis more money than others did. This offer didn’t include his base price of Rs 2.2 crore. Basically, Ashwin admitted CSK paid Brevis under the table.
“DB (Dewald Brevis) had an outstanding second half of the season for CSK. I came to understand that two or three other teams also spoke with him, but they missed picking because of having to pay extra money. While picking up a player mid-season, there will be discussions with the player’s agent to negotiate an ‘X’ amount apart from the base price to acquire his services. CSK were willing to pay the extra money, due to which he (Brevis) came into the franchise,” Ashwin said in the YouTube video.
CSK fans weren’t pleased with this revelation. One X (formerly Twitter) user stated that Ashwin is leaking confidential information and should retire from IPL. Another hopes whatever money CSK paid Brevis should have come from the 9.75 crore paid to Ashwin.
