ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Campers at the Boys and Girls Club in Rochester had an exciting day as they received backpacks and autographs from Melvin Council Jr., a figure they can look up to. Council, who also was once a young kid with a dream of playing basketball at a high level, is now giving back to his community.
“Growing up I was looking up to guys that were ahead of me, like Thomas Bryant, Isaiah Stewart, Jalen Pickett,” Council said. “And to be that type of guy giving back and making kids look up to me.”
Council’s popularity is rising, as he enters into his final college basketball season at Kansas, but he remains grounded and focused on his mission to support local young athletes.
“Me growing up, I could’ve went to the John Lucas CP3 camp, I just didn’t have the money for it,” Council said. “Every camp that I’m going to do, it’s not just going to be one year, it’s going to be forever, and it’s going to be free.”
Council will play for the Kansas Jayhawks next season, yet he remains committed to representing Rochester.
“A lot of people don’t know where Rochester, New York is and we got some great basketball players,” Council said. “I want to try to be that guy to put Rochester on my back still, because we still got sleepers and I’m glad that we got little kids that love basketball to this day.”
Council is determined to reach the NBA and is using his experiences to inspire the next generation.
“Win or lose, fans are going to support you, they’re going to not support you,” Council said. “I’m just ready for it. It’s my last year and I want to go to the NBA, so why not go at that school and get prepared.”
Council’s journey from Monroe College to Wagner to St. Bonaventure to Kansas shows his dedication and growth as an athlete. His story continues to inspire young basketball enthusiasts in Rochester.
