Chicago Fire Star Pens Emotional Tribute After Filming Last Scenes

Chicago Fire star Daniel Kyri said goodbye to the show while reflecting on his final day on set as character Darren Ritter.

"Okay. Yesterday, I filmed my last scenes as Ritter & I’m still so amazed that my first-ever TV gig — a role that was originally meant for just three episodes—turned into seven incredible years (SEVEN?!?!! Whatttt???!) and spanned eight seasons of this iconic show!" Kyri, 30, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday, August 13. "While I know I may never find another cast and crew as amazing as this one, I intend to carry what I’ve learned from you to every set in the future."

    He then thanked production team Wolf Entertainment and "everyone involved in the creation of Darren Ritter." Kyri credited "every writer who recognized me & aligned with my intention & vision for the potential of this character."

    After he thanked "the fans who embraced & celebrated Ritter for every aspect of his humanity," he said that he "can’t wait for you all to see what we cooked up this season."

    The tribute continued with Kyri thanking his co-stars "who have shown up for me with relentless loyalty, compassion, & love throughout my time on this show & now as I move through this enormous transition in my life."

    "Each one of you has become so incredibly important to me, & the care (& patience!) you’ve shown is entirely indispensable," Kyri continued. "Thank you so much for the gift of your friendship."

    Kyri concluded the post by stating that Chicago Fire "changed" his life. "Bringing Darren Ritter to the screen has transformed & healed me in equal measure. He is a man who embodies empathy, humility, compassion, and unwavering bravery to save lives," he wrote. "His heroism is further fortified by the way he navigates the world—a gay Black firefighter who is proud, fierce, loyal, & whole—a possibility I never got to see onscreen in my childhood but desperately craved …"

    "I am so humbled & proud to have portrayed you. I’m thrilled that my inner child would have looked at you each week in awe of everything you represent," Kyri wrote. "You made history. Thank you so much, Darren Ritter. And goodbye."

    Alongside the lengthy caption, Kyri uploaded a photo of him in character and a snapshot of a chair with his name on it that has his character's jacket and helmet resting on it.

    Kyri joined joined the popular show in season 7 as a recurring guest star and was promoted to a series regular in season 9. He confirmed that season 13 would be his last in April, though later teased that he would make an appearance in the upcoming season 14.
