A company specializing in security solutions is grappling with their own sense of security after a catalytic converter theft from one of their work trucks was caught on surveillance footage last week.
Early Friday morning, a two-man crew stole the catalytic converter off a work truck in Chicago’s South Austin neighborhood on the 5900 block of West Roosevelt Road.
It took the thieves just 68 seconds to climb under the truck, cut the catalytic converter lose and flee from the scene.
Ravid Ayala with Taurus Security Shutters said the vehicle wouldn’t start, and then he noticed some debris on the ground.
Prior to the incident, Ayala said he felt they had taken every step possible to keep their business safe.
“We have the security camera, it’s right in front of the business,” he said, adding that their business is located on a main street. “I mean, who would be like just so dumb to try that.”
Ayala said the theft was a major blow to the company’s bottom line as they’ve had to cancel multiple jobs since Friday, costing them an estimated total of roughly $15,000.
“They were depending on us to go install security shutters,” Ayala said of the jobs that have been impacted by the theft. “We just had to put that to the back end while we take care of this.”
