The Little League World Series kicks off in Pennsylvania Wednesday, and a team from Chicago’s suburbs will be in one of the first games.
A squad from suburban Clarendon Hills, who won the Great Lakes Regional title last week, will be on the field in Williamsport on Wednesday afternoon in the opening game of the U.S. side of the bracket.
According to the LLWS website, the Clarendon Hills squad will take on Summerlin South Little League, who are representing the Mountain Region out of Las Vegas, Nevada.
That game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Central time, and will air on ESPN.
The winner of that game will take on Bonney Lake/Sumner Little League, who are representing the Northwest Region out of Bonney Lake, Washington. That game will take place on Friday at 2 p.m., and will also air on ESPN.
Since the tournament is double-elimination, if Clarendon Hills falls in their Wednesday game, they would be back in action Saturday at 6 p.m., either facing Sioux Falls or Glenmoore Eagle (Uwchlan Township, Pennsylvania) in that contest.
The Clarendon Hills squad, who had been thrashed by the team from Hamilton, Ohio’s West Side Little League by a score of 11-1 earlier in regional competition, returned the favor with an emphatic victory in the Great Lakes Regional Championship on Wednesday night.
The Illinois squad raced out to a 9-0 lead and seemed to be on cruise control, but the Hamilton team wouldn’t go away, with a bases-clearing triple with two outs reducing the deficit to 9-4 in the final inning. Brody Herold, facing his final batter because of pitch limit, was able to get a strikeout to end things, sending Clarendon Hills to Williamsport.
Clarendon Hills team defeated La Grange Park to capture the Illinois state title last month, enabling them to head to regional play.
This year’s team marks the second consecutive squad from Illinois to win the Great Lakes Regional, following up on Hinsdale Little League’s appearance in Williamsport last year. They dropped both of their games, falling to Hawaii and New York in shutout losses.
A team from the Great Lakes region has only won the Little League World Series on two occasions, most recently in 2021 when Taylor North Little League from Michigan won the title in a U.S.-only version of the tournament.
