For this reason, head coaches and offensive coordinators value quarterbacks who will make smart decisions and keep the ball out of harm’s way. If Ryan Grubb is to be believed, nobody did a better job at that during Alabama‘s quarterback competition than Ty Simpson.
Grubb, the new Crimson Tide offensive coordinator, lauded Simpson’s sound operation during his Tuesday press conference. His praise for Simpson comes one day after the redshirt junior was named Alabama’s QB1.
“Ty did a really nice job of taking care of the football, number one. I think Ty is an incredible playmaker on the move. From there, guys like that, you worry, ‘are they gonna be able to train themselves to take care of the football?'” Grubb said. “Even the room, in general, Ty led that charge. Ty didn’t throw any picks last week. He’s thrown 1 all camp.”
Grubb believes Simpson’s focus has impacted the rest of the team’s quarterbacks. He told reporters there have only been 4 interceptions this camp, compared to “like 15” at this time last season. In his opinion, all of Alabama’s quarterbacks are “understanding the concepts [and controlling] the offense” much better than they did in 2024. But Simpson still stood out from the crowd in that respect.
“His ability to command and create out of the pocket was the best. [He] made great decisions,” Grubb stated. “He’s just much cleaner on some of the things you’d expect an older quarterback to be able to do.”
Crimson Tide fans hope to see Simpson prove Grubb right as soon as possible. His first gig as QB1 comes in a true road affair against Florida State on Aug. 30.
