A stormy morning led to some heavy downpours and lightning in the Chicago area Tuesday, sparking ground stops at Chicago airports — and more storms could still be on the way.
As of 6:45 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said ground stops were in place until 7:30 a.m. at O’Hare Airport and 7:15 a.m. at Midway Airport due to thunderstorms.
Storms at that time were lingering in parts of Cook and DuPage counties. Another line of storms was also developing far north and west of Chicago that could lead to another round of morning storms if it continued into the area.
The morning systems threatened to bring heavy downpours, gusty winds, and lightning strikes, with some winds gusting up to 60 mph.
But the morning storms won’t be the only chance for rain Tuesday.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman warned a second round, this one more widespread, could move through in the afternoon and evening hours, threatening to bring some storms “on the stronger side.” The greatest threat will sit near and southeast of Interstate 55.
Meanwhile, high temperatures are expected to be in the mid-to-upper 80s once again, with high humidity driving heat indices into the 90s in some locations.
Those hot and humid conditions could help to fuel the strong-to-even severe thunderstorms in some parts of the area, with the Storm Prediction Center placing Cook, Will and Kankakee counties at a “marginal” risk for severe storms, along with all of northern Indiana.
With that storm system finally departing the region Wednesday, temperatures are expected to cool into the low-to-mid 80s. Those conditions are expected to last into Thursday, but another warmup could be on the way for the weekend.
Highs Friday and Saturday could once again rise into the low-90s, with increasing humidity culminating in the return of showers and thunderstorms to the area beginning Sunday, according to forecast models.
Another cooldown is expected behind that system, and may arrive by early next week, with highs dropping back into the low-80s across the area.
