On January 21st, just a day after Trump retook office, we checked the prices of three grocery staples—a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, and a dozen eggs— from fives stores using each store’s generic brand: Tops, Aldi, Price Rite, Wegmans, and Walmart. We checked the prices again two months into his second term on March 17th, you can find the results from then here.
We then averaged the prices of those three items across the fives stores on January 21st, March 17, and today, August 11th.
In January, the average prices were $1.53 for bread, $3.23 for milk, and $4.64 for eggs.
By March, bread and milk prices had decreased to $1.42 and $2.83, respectively, but eggs spiked to nearly $6 per carton due to the bird flu outbreak affecting the United States.
Today, bread has increased to $1.76, but was priced at $3.02, and eggs have dropped to $3.05 – nearly half of what they were in March.
Overall, the average cost of these three staples has decreased by about 16% since January.
