ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The City of Rochester Housing Authority celebrated the opening of the Bond Hamilton Townhouses on Hamilton Street in the South Wedge.
The new affordable housing development, called Bond Hamilton Townhouses, features six ADA-accessible units and was designed to blend in with existing homes in the neighborhood.
Mayor Malik Evans said the city and its partners have launched or planned more than 3,000 affordable rental units since 2022. This includes 486 units completed between 2022 and 2024.
“That’s not a number we throw around lightly. It means families have safe and secure homes. It means children that have steady places to grow up,” Evans said.
The project has been in development since 2019 and is federally funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Housing Authority Executive Director Shawn Burr said residents will pay 30% of their adjusted income for rent. The median income in Rochester is more than $48,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Burr said there is an extreme need for affordable and accessible housing.
“We don’t have enough, and these units are for families,” Burr said. “Most of our accessible housing is single one-bedroom units, and they’re designed more for elderly, but this is for families.”
Evans also highlighted the city’s new “Rehabilitate the Dream” program, launched last week. The initiative encourages homebuyers to transform vacant properties by offering financial subsidies and other perks if they agree to live in the home for 15 years.
“Housing is an extremely important, important, factor in our community, you know, it’s important that people have access to safe, quality, affordable housing,” Evans said.
The Housing Authority is exploring additional ways to increase affordable housing options. The opening of the Bond Hamilton Townhouses marks a significant step in the Housing Authority’s mission to provide accessible and high-quality homes.
“Although we’re renovating what we already own, we’re also developing land that we’ve acquired to provide more housing opportunities,” Burr said.
