Miami Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison will miss the 2025 NFL season after suffering an injury against the Chicago Bears, a new report says.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and other reports, Mattison suffered a neck injury during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Bears, and underwent season-ending surgery on Sunday night in Chicago.
On the play, Mattison caught a ball out of the backfield from quarterback Quinn Ewers and then began sprinting toward the end zone, picking up a first down and ultimately gaining 21 yards before he was tackled to the ground by Bears linebacker Carl Jones.
Mattison landed on the top of his head as he hit the ground, and trainers were immediately summoned onto the field.
He was able to walk to the locker room, but was taken by ambulance to a Chicago hospital, where he underwent surgery on Sunday according to Schefter’s report.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Mattison had “full strength and motion” after the injury, and that he’s expected to make a full recovery.
Mattison had been one of several Dolphins players competing for playing time this summer, with De’Von Achane likely getting the bulk of the work and Jaylen Wright handling second-string duties in Sunday’s game at Soldier Field.
According to Schefter, the Dolphins have already begun auditioning potential replacements for Mattison this season, bringing in former Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams for a workout.
Mattison has had multiple concussions in his NFL career, most recently in 2023 when he was playing in a November game against the Saints. He only missed the rest of that contest, and returned the following week.
