Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie’s Wuthering Heights Remake Is Stirring Up Debate

Jacob Elordi’s new role in the latest adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 classic novel Wuthering Heights is causing a stir online.

The film is directed by Emerald Fennell (Saltburn) and sees Elordi as Heathcliff, one of literatures most famous roles, and Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw. It's ignited fierce debate following its first test screening in Dallas, according to various reports.

For starters, the film departs dramatically from the original’s brooding romanticism, weaving in what one attendee described as “aggressively provocative” imagery and hyper-sexualised set-pieces, a World of Reel report stated.

In the opening sequence screened for a test audience — which may or may not make it to the final film version — a public hanging spirals into surreal spectacle when the condemned man ejaculates mid-execution, prompting an “orgiastic frenzy” among spectators, including a nun who "fondles the corpse’s visible erection," according to one attendee.

From there, the film reportedly leans further into sexual extremes.

Audience members cited scenes involving a “purposefully discomforting" masturbation scene, a bondage encounter using horse reins, and sensual close-ups of egg yolks, bread dough, and slug trails.

One attendee likened the tone to the “stylised depravity” of Fennell’s previous film, Saltburn, which also starred Elordi.

Despite it all, World of Reel’s Jordan Ruimy said after the screening that the experimental remake of the classic novel "might not be a bad thing."

"The last thing anyone wants is another by-the-numbers adaptation," Ruimy wrote. "What the next film version called for was a jolt of fresh energy, something bold and unexpected. For better or worse, it seems that’s exactly what Emerald Fennell may have brought to the table." The casting — with Elordi, 28, and Robbie, 35, playing characters who are teenagers for much of the book — has also drawn criticism, alongside changes to the period setting and aesthetic.

Casting director Kharmel Cochrane, speaking at the Sands Film Festival in Scotland earlier this year, addressed the backlash directly.

“There was one Instagram comment that said the casting director should be shot,” Cochrane said, according to Deadline. “But just wait till you see it, and then you can decide whether you want to shoot me or not. But you really don’t need to be accurate. It’s just a book. That is not based on real life. It’s all art."

Brontë’s original story follows the turbulent relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff amid family rivalries in the late 18th century.

Alongside Elordi and Robbie, the cast includes Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, and Owen Cooper as young Heathcliff.

The film is set to hit theaters on Feb. 13, 2026 — just in time for Valentine's Day.
