Both Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Anders Dreyer scored Saturday as San Diego FC continued its road surge, beating Sporting KC 2-0.
It was the fifth straight road win for San Diego (15-7-4) and its eighth road win in its inaugural season. San Diego improved to 7-2-1 in its last 10 MLS contests.
“I think it’s a credit to the guys, this road-performance mentality, that we can go and win everywhere,” said head coach Mikey Varas.
With Vancouver FC’s 2-1 loss to San Jose, SDFC ended the night by itself atop the Western Conference.
Lozano scored in the 23rd minute after taking a short pass from Dreyer — the league leader in assists. He put it in with a right-footed shot from distance in the center of the box, past past Sporting KC goalkeeper John Pulskamp, for a 1-0 lead.
“We want to help each other,” Dreyer said of his work with Lozano. “And yeah, Chucky knows that I will always look for him when I’m on the ball, because he’s great going in behind and yeah, like we see today with a with a very nice goal.”

And with Dreyer’s score, San Diego became the first team to reach 50 goals scored in the MLS regular season this year.
Goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos earned his eighth MLS regular season clean sheet.
But the 2-0 win wasn’t easy, Varas noted. The difference? “At the end of the game, just having all 11 players low and finding a way to close out a game where we had lost the momentum,” he said.
Kansas City (6-13-6) is luckless against the Western Conference’s top teams as it was coming off a 3-0 loss to Vancouver on July 26.
The match marked SDFC’s return to MLS play – they beat Nashville FC 1-0 on July 25 at Snapdragon Stadium – before heading into three Leagues Cup matches.
SDFC has a chance to remain hot on the road at 4 p.m. Aug. 17, when the club faces the San Jose Earthquakes.
