Chicago Cubs Lineup: Somebody Help ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs are quickly approaching an almost insurmountable gap in the NL Central race, given how little time remains in the season. Frankly, it wasn’t for the five head-to-head games against the Brewers starting next week, we might already be there. Until then, the offense needs to find a way to wake up, and Craig Counsell must find a way to stop the bleeding.

Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 2 against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Yesterday’s shake-it-up lineup with Ian Happ, Carson Kelly, and Willi Castro batting fourth, sixth, and seventh didn’t amount to much, so Craig Counsell is going back to something a little more familiar (but not totally default).

By which I mean Carson Kelly is batting cleanup, despite a righty on the mound, and PCA is hitting fifth. Ian Happ follows, and Matt Shaw (not Willi Castro) is at third.

Kyle Tucker remains in the three-spot, with Suzuki elevated to batting second.

I don’t know if any of that really matters.

Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP

We talked about Colin Rea in the series preview a bit, but here’s the short version: Although he has been filling in admirably all season, he’s started to produce (and slump) in bunches. And right now, he’s in a bit of a rut, allowing 11 earned runs over his last 13.2 IP (three starts).

Perhaps at some point soon, Jameson Taillon or Javier Assad will bump Rea from the rotation, but for now, the Cubs need him to get right again. Unfortunately, the Cardinals are a stronger offense vs RHP than they are versus lefties, and they’re a lot better at home, too. To get even more granular, they have a 115 wRC+ vs RHP at Busch Stadium, which is quite strong.

For what it’s worth, Rea handled the Cardinals well back on the Fourth of July, allowing just one earned run on two hits and two walks over 6.2 IP. Would love a repeat of that performance tonight.

St. Louis Cardinals: Andre Pallante, RHP

Andre Pallante has not had an impressive season overall this year, but he did have a fairly successful outing the last time he faced the Cubs lineup, allowing just two earned runs over 5.0 innings. He’s also coming off back-to-back nice games against the Marlins (7.0 IP, 1H, 0ER, 1BB, 4K) and Padres (5.0 IP, 5H, 2ER, 3BB, 4K. So I wouldn’t be so quick to get excited.

Still, this is a guy who relies HEAVILY on BABIP, as his 15.4% strikeout rate is among the lowest in baseball.

With that said, he has an incredibly high 60.6% groundball rate, which can be an effective rally killer when the defense is on.

Also of note, Pallante has pretty significant reverse splits both this season and for his career, meaning righties have hit him a lot better than lefties.
