Police respond to fatal medical emergency, recognize victim as one of their own

Police in Northwest Indiana responded to a call of a hockey player experiencing a medical emergency Friday, only to discover the unconscious man was one of their fellow officers.

Just before 10 p.m. Friday, officers with the St. John Police Department responded to a call of a man playing hockey who was experiencing a medical emergency and was unconscious at the Midwest Training and Ice Center, 10600 White Oak Avenue.

When the officers arrived, they saw bystanders performing CPR on the man, police said. They then immediately noticed the man was one of their fellow officers, Detective Aaron Amptmeyer.

St. John EMS “rigorously” continued CPR until their arrival at a local hospital. Staff in the emergency room continued life saving measures for several minutes but were tragically unable to revive Amptmeyer, police said.

“Aaron is loved and will be missed by so many,” Chief of Police Steven Flores said in a statement. “Aaron will never be forgotten.”

Detective Amptmeyer was a highly decorated police officer who had been in law enforcement for 20 years, police said. He worked through the ranks, moving from patrol officer to tac officer, detective, and ultimately to “his most important and passionate position,” Commander of the Northwest Regional SWAT team, police said.

“He loved his SWAT team and all of us at the St. John Police Department loved him,” Chief of Police Steven Flores said in a statement. “He was a devoted father to his lovely daughter who he cherished more than anything in the world.”

Amptmeyer started his law enforcement career with the Gary Police Department in 2005. He transferred to Dyer Police Department two years later and then transferred again to the St. John Police Department in 2018.

“Detective Amptmeyer touched so many lives and has been so instrumental in developing young police officers,” Chief of Police Steven Flores said in a statement.
