AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Saturday, Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows (R – Lubbock) and Attorney General Ken Paxton said they filed a legal complaint in California.
The complaint pertained to the enforcement of arrest warrants issued for legislators who had left Texas and broken quorum.
Burrows issued the arrest warrants on August 4. He stated that he had the authority under Article III, Section 10 of the Texas Constitution and Rule 5, Section 8, of the Rules of the Texas House of Representatives, which can be found on page 92.
“The Texas House stands ready to conduct the work expected of us by our constituents, but until the absent members return, our state will continue to do without critical disaster relief and solutions for a more prepared and resilient Texas,” Burrows said.
According to Burrows’ office, a similar complaint was also filed in Illinois.
“[The legal complaint] seeks to enforce the quorum warrants in accordance with the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution and federal statute,” Burrows’ office said.
