What Happened to Roman Polanski After Sharon Tates Death, 56 Years Later

On the night of August 9, 1969, Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant and on the brink of stardom, was murdered in her Los Angeles home by followers of Charles Manson.

Fifty-six years later, her death still looms — not only in true crime history, but in the life and legacy of her husband, Roman Polanski. The French director was in London when the murders occurred, returning days later to a horrific scene.

Polanski's friend Andy Braunsberg reportedly witnessed the filmmaker’s complete breakdown when he received news of his wife's death. "He literally unraveled in front of my eyes," Braunsberg later told author Ed Sanders in Sharon Tate: A Life. "He disintegrated."

In press notes for his 2019 film J’Accuse, Polanski reportedly claimed that he was under heavy suspicion following Tate’s murder — until the real killers were eventually identified.

"The way people see me, my 'image,' did indeed start to form with Sharon Tate's death," Polanski said. "When it happened, even though I was already going through a terrible time, the press got hold of the tragedy and, unsure how to deal with it, covered it in the most despicable way, implying, among other things, that I was one of the people responsible for her murder, against a background of satanism."

However, Tate's death was only the beginning of Polanski's legal problems. Nearly a decade after her tragic passing, the director pleaded guilty to unlawful intercourse with a minor after 13-year-old Samantha Geimer accused him of giving her alcohol and part of a quaalude before assaulting her.

Polanski’s plea deal required him to serve 90 days in jail, but after completing just 42, he fled to France. Despite multiple failed extradition attempts, Polanski has continued directing films from Europe, including 2003’s The Pianist, which won him the Oscar for Best Director.

As a result, Polanski hasn’t visited Tate’s grave in over four decades. The director was then thrust back into the spotlight following Manson’s death in November 2017.

"It is a very painful thing," his attorney said in a statement to People. "Sharon and his son are buried here in Los Angeles at Holy Cross Cemetery and because of this case, he has never been able to visit their graves."

Today, Polanski continues to live and work in Europe, with his latest film, The Palace, released in 2023, and his 2019 film, An Officer and a Spy (J’accuse), just released in the U.S.
