Community celebrates West Indian culture at annual Carifest Parade and Festival

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester is celebrating West Indian culture with the 39th annual Carifest and Parade on Saturday.

From good food to culture education, Carifest aims to celebrate and bring West Indian culture to the City of Rochester. Celebration kicked off Saturday morning with a parade starting at MLK Jr. Memorial Park, making its way down Main Street to East Avenue. The parade ends back at MLK Park, but the party doesn’t end there.

The festival starts at 1 p.m. at the park and will feature DJs, cultural performances, and education to honor Caribbean heritage. The festival will run until 8 p.m.

One marcher at the parade was there to celebrate her culture, and to honor her grandson Zy’Jae Saint Pierre.

Zy’Jae fell into the Genesee River on June 1, and his body hasn’t been found. His grandmother told News10NBC she wants to keep awareness for search efforts alive, and that Carifest is the perfect place to honor him.
