Family honors boy who fell in the Genesee River during parade Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Just over two months since a 5-year-old boy fell into the Genesee River, his family is out honoring him in the community, hoping to keep awareness of search efforts alive.

Zy’Jae Saint Pierre fell over the railing of the Andrews Street Bridge and into the river on June 1. Despite various search efforts including multiple local and state agencies, his body hasn’t been found.

    Since then, Zy’Jae’s family, loved ones, and community members have come together to honor him. Just days after the fall, hundreds gathered at the bridge to pray. People left balloons and action figures.

    Saturday morning, Zy’Jae’s family headed out to the annual Carifest Parade and Festival to keep awareness for the search efforts alive. The parade and festival celebrates West Indian culture with music, dancing, food, and education.

    Zy’Jae’s family says he loved the color red, Paw Patrol, and was an energetic spirit. So Saturday morning, his family dressed in his favorite color and celebrated their Jamacian heritage. His family told a News10NBC photojournalist at the event it’s the perfect way to honor him.

    The parade started at 11 a.m. at MLK Jr. Memorial Park. The festival will kick off at 1 p.m., back at the park. That’s set to wind down around 8 p.m.
