Heat and high humidity bring a chance of thunderstorms to the Chicago area Saturday.
Temperatures will be in the mid 90’s, but with humidity, it will feel closer to 100 degrees, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.
A southwest breeze with gusts up to 20 mph Saturday may provide some relief from the high temperatures.
Strong storms will move in from Iowa and Wisconsin, but the impact on the Chicago area depends on “how well they hold together as they drop farther to the south,” Jeanes said.
Around 5 p.m. Saturday there is a chance of thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts across southern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois.
The greatest chance of storms on Saturday are in northwestern Illinois, including Kane, McHenry, Boone and DeKalb counties.
The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook alert for portions of north central Illinois, northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana for Saturday stating the strongest storms may be capable of producing torrential downpours, damaging wind gusts and hail.
“Expect uncomfortable heat and humidity,” the alert warns.
Saturday night has a 30% chance of precipitation in the Chicago area, with the possible storms hitting before 10 p.m.
The Chicago area will see slightly cooler temperatures on Sunday and Monday, but the humidity is expected to stick around for several days.
Sunday will see more intermittent but scattered showers and storms.
There will be lots of dry times throughout Sunday, but a chance of thunderstorms is present in the late morning and through the afternoon.
After 1 p.m. Sunday, there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Moving into Sunday night, the likelihood of storms and showers increases to 40%.
In northwestern Illinois, including Kane, DuPage, McHenry and LaSalle counties, the storms bring with them an elevated flooding risk on Sunday, according to the NWS.
