Tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen appliances and numerous homemade explosives were recovered by sheriff’s detectives during a search warrant in a suburban home Thursday.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office said their detectives began investigating after reports surfaced of a man selling brand-new appliances at unusually low prices on social media.
Detectives conducted an undercover operation and purchased an LG oven from 36-year-old Jeffery L. Hendon, Jr. of unincorporated Barrington.
The oven’s serial number confirmed it was stolen, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office conducted a search warrant at Hendon’s property in unincorporated Barrington Thursday and recovered 71 stolen LG ovens and dryers.
While searching the property, detectives also found a “large number” of homemade explosives, the sheriff’s office said.
Waukegan Bomb Squad responded to safely collect and dispose of the explosives.
Further investigation revealed the oven purchased during the undercover investigation, along with numerous other LG appliances, were stolen in February from a Lockport warehouse, the sheriff’s office said. The appliances were part of a shipment taken from a cargo truck at a distribution center.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges against Hendon, Jr., for online sale of stolen goods, theft over $10,000, and unlawful possession of explosives, the sheriff’s office said. Additional charges are likely.
“Theft on this scale not only impacts the businesses targeted, but also drives up costs for consumers,” Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said. Thanks to the thorough work of our detectives and the cooperation of our law enforcement partners, we recovered stolen property, removed dangerous explosives from the community, and are holding the offender accountable.”
