Angel City Football Club resumes rivalry against San Diego Wave FC

It’s rivalry week in the NWSL, which means Angel City Football Club is headed down south to visit San Diego Wave FC.

It will also give Angel City coach Alex Straus another meeting against Jonas Eidevall. Straus (Bayern Munich) and Eidevall (Arsenal) met three times in Europe, Straus pointed out that he currently has a 2-1 edge.

“With the last club I was with (Bayern Munich), we played against him three times. Right now our record is 2-1, me. I played against him last year (Oct. 9, 2024) winning 5-2 in the Champions League … (In 2022-23) we played in the quarterfinals and won 1-0 in Munich and then they beat us 2-0 in London.”

“I know him quite well. He’s a good guy and a good coach. The difference is that he has had six or seven months preparation and more work than I have had with my team. He’s made some additions in the winter when we have had less time to do that. When I watched the film while preparing for the game, it’s some things that were similar to what they wanted to do, but a lot of things are also different with this team.”

Angel City and San Diego made their debut together in 2022. Angel City has a slim edge (3-2-2).

“It’s two clubs that were introduced to the NWSL at the same time,” Straus said. “It’s been a short history for both, but so close together. I’m sure there will be a lot of fans in the stands. They have been doing really well, except last year. We need to respect them for that. We want to catch them and have the same success in the future.”

Angel City (4-7-3) returned from the summer break and suffered a 2-0 loss against the Seattle Reign. San Diego (7-3-4) currently sit in fourth place on 25 points. Angel City remained in 11th place after last week’s loss.

“I think the first 35 minutes of the game, we looked like a completely different team than before,” Straus said. “We looked more like the team how we are going to look going into the future. We had control of the game and were one pass away from creating really, really big chances.

“Then we lose a bit of our structure and our front pressing after 35 minutes, they managed to break us with a switch or two, then we drop deeper in our pressing and we lose a bit of our momentum. Still, I think it was pretty even until they score.”

The first meeting between Angel City and San Diego ended in a 1-1 draw, March 16 in the season opener.
