The breakout star of this summer’s “Superman” movie didn’t come from the Planet Krypton.

Instead, the dog that inspired superdog Krypto was adopted from a Riverside County animal shelter

“Superman” director James Gunn’s own dog, Ozu, inspired the film’s portrayal of Krypto, he told attendees at Cinemacon in April.

Gunn told the Cinemacon audience that Ozu was an emotionally damaged rescue dog, according to Variety. Ozu would reportedly run away from Gunn, destroy his furniture and electronics and attack Gunn’s feet during conference calls, forcing him to climb onto the kitchen counter to escape.

“I didn’t know if he was playing or he hated my guts,” USA Today quoted Gunn as saying at Cinemacon.

All of which sounds a lot like Krypto, as moviegoers know. Ozu even provided the 3D model for the CGI-created Krypto.

“Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him,” Gunn posted to Instagram in October 2024.

But Ozu not only changed the “Superman” script after Gunn wondered what it would be like if Ozu had superpowers, but also the director’s life, he wrote.

“If a dog who started at our shelter system can inspire a movie hero, it’s proof that animals in our care have the potential to do incredible things,” Riverside County Department of Animal Services Lieutenant of Field Services James Huffman said in a news release. “You don’t need a cape to be a hero — just a willingness to open your home and heart to a shelter pet.”

Riverside County’s is one of the highest-volume shelter systems in the country, sheltering more than 35,000 animals each year across four locations in Jurupa Valley, San Jacinto, Thousand Palms and Blythe. The shelters regularly struggle with capacity issues.

In Ozu’s honor, the department is hosting a monthlong “Unleash Your Superpower – Adopt a Hero” event in August. It is waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats adopted. Adoptions also include spay/neuter surgery for the animals, vaccinations, microchips and engraved ID tags.

The system’s kennels are currently over capacity, according to the department, and officials hope the event reduces the number of animals at its facilities.

“We can all do more, and this story shows the power of giving shelter pets a second chance,” Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said in the release. “You never know who is waiting for you at a Riverside County shelter, and there is no better time to make a lasting connection.”
