ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RG&E and NYSEG customers are being warned about a new text message scam that appears to be taking advantage of the utility’s recent billing issues.
News10NBC has been reporting on problems with RG&E and NYSEG’s new payment system for the past few months. Customers signed up for auto-pay started receiving shut-off notices when the new system failed to pull their payments on the agreed-upon dates.
“I knew immediately, once again they’ve got some sort of error in their billing system and they didn’t proactively contact me or anything, they expect me to something,” said Ron Meyers, an RG&E customer back in July.
“So, I called and ya know they actually made it sound like they were doing me a favor by taking the late fee off, I’m like the problem is on your end!” said Pete VanWaes, another RG&E customer, last week.
While RG&E and NYSEG continue to work through these problems, the utilities have asked impacted customers to contact them directly to receive a credit for the inconvenience.
It appears that promise is now the basis of a new local text scam.
Some customers have reported receiving a text from what appears to be a local number claiming to be RG&E that reads, “RG&E: You have been overcharged in the past few billing cycles. Please login here and complete form to receive credit.” It then includes a link.
The text is bogus and should be deleted immediately without clicking the link.
If a customer is owed a credit, it should come directly on your bill. However, if it doesn’t, the customer should call the utility directly to ensure they are dealing with real customer service agents.
RG&E and NYSEG have seen an increase in these kind of text and phone scams over the last several months. For more information about how to protect yourself, click here.
