44-year-old recovering from heart attack thanks Sharp Grossmont Hospital medical team for saving his life

LA MESA — It isn’t a miracle he’s alive.

Rather, it’s the result of early detection, a skilled team and fast response.

David Worsham, 44, is recovering after suffering a major heart attack in the spring.

On Friday, Aug. 1, the husband and father reunited with the medical team at Sharp Grossmont Hospital who gave him emergency medical care.

Among those present were Dr. Alexandra Kharazi, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Sharp Grossmont Hospital Burr Heart and Vascular Center, and Dr. Mohammed Al-Janabi, an intensivist and pulmonologist with Sharp Community Medical Group.

Worsham is well below the average age men have their first heart attack, 65, based on data from the American Heart Association.

However, Worsham’s own father died from heart failure at age 52.

    Fast response

The last thing Worsham remembers is leaving the parking lot of his daughter’s school after a meeting.

Later that day, his wife of two decades, Heather Worsham, recalled his complaints of pain in the middle of his back. When he began slurring his speech, she rushed him to urgent care.

“As I was driving, I noticed he became quieter, and his breathing was strange,” recalled Heather. “He looked at me from the passenger’s seat. Then, suddenly, his eyes closed, and his body arched and collapsed.”

Despite the unexpected medical crisis in an otherwise healthy adult, Worsham’s wife recognized the signs of heart attack.

She called 911 and was coached through cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Bystanders assisted in pulling Worsham from her car and administrating CPR.

When the ambulance arrived, EMTs continued CPR while Worsham was transported to Grossmont’s emergency room.

“His heart wasn’t pumping effectively, and multiple organ systems were starting to shut down. It was a life-threatening situation, but early recognition and fast coordination allowed us to act quickly,” explained Dr. Kharazi in a statement.

Tests revealed he had a 100% blockage of his lower left ventricle.

“To better understand David’s condition, we placed a special heart catheter to measure his heart and lung pressures,” said Dr. Al-Janabi. The catheter confirmed Worsham had severe heart failure.

For the next step, surgeons installed a temporary mini-heart pump, Impella Device, so the heart could rest and recover while the pump circulated blood an oxygen in the body.

    Recovery

The combination of Heather Worsham knowing the signs of the heart attack, calling 911 immediately, people administering CPR and an interdisciplinary team using cutting-edge care is credited with saving Worsham’s life.

The aerospace machinist’s life changed significantly after the medical emergency. He still has his church community and family to support him, as well as a dedicated medical team.

In the months since, Worsham slowly regained mobility, pain lessened and he sleeps better.

“Rehab has been great and I feel a lot healthier,” he said at the event to thank his medical team.

“We are grateful for everyone—from the nurses who are the boots-on-the-ground knowing what was going on, to the doctors who helped save his life. Everyone communicated with one another, and the care was seamless,” said Heather. “None of us could have expected any of this. But we all came together as a family through this journey.”
