4 questions as British man accused of ‘affair with daughter-in-law he tried to drown’

A British man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and battery after allegedly trying to drown his daughter-in-law, a year after his son ran him over in his car.

A family source told the Daily Mail that Mark Gibbon, 62, of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, had been in a romantic relationship with hairdresser Jasmine Wyld, 33, for the past two years, and the pair regularly went on family holidays together.

Ms Wyld is divorced from Mr Gibbon’s son Alex, 34, with whom she shares two children. The couple separated in 2021.

Mr Gibbon, a lighting supplier to the film and TV industry and who is divorced from Alex’s mother, was on holiday near Disney World in Florida with Ms Wyld and her children.

Two neighbours called police when a row between Mr Gibbon and Ms Wyld last Sunday led to him pushing her under the water of the swimming pool at their rental home at the Solterra Resort in Davenport, Florida.

According to Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Mr Gibbon had “shoved” Ms Wyld’s head under the water. His nine-year-old granddaughter jumped in to stop him, and he pushed her away.

The police report revealed that Ms Wyld “advised that she could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown. The victim advised that she had to fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water, but he kept pushing her back under”.

Mr Gibbon allegedly only stopped the attempted drowning when two neighbouring sisters said that they had called the Sheriff’s Office.

He was taken into custody at 5.19pm on 3 August.

What do we know about Mark Gibbon?

Mr Gibbon is understood to have told police he had been drinking and admitted to pushing his daughter-in-law under the water, but denied trying to drown her.

He has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and battery and will next appear in court on 9 September.

Grady Judd, the sheriff of Polk County, said: “Because Mr Gibbon couldn’t control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.”

One of Mr Gibbon’s Beaconsfield neighbours told The Times that there was local speculation over the nature of his relationship with Ms Wyld. He said: “Only Mark and Jasmine were on holiday with the two children – no other family members were there.”

When questioned by Florida police, both Gibbon and Wyld denied being a couple. Polk County Sheriff’s Office told The Sun that a detective had asked them “about their relationship to determine if the incident would be classified as domestic violence”.

However, a family source told the Daily Mail that they were in a long-term relationship, and that Alex Gibbon no longer spoke to his father as a result.

The source said: “Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they’ve never admitted it. Alex and his dad don’t speak at all. There have been a number of issues within the family. He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children.

“Mark and Jasmine do an awful lot together, and they go away on holiday with the children a couple of times every year.

“She is always round at his house. She has a place of her own, but she’s nearly always in Beaconsfield with Mark.

“They went to Florida two years ago and have been to Budapest, where she posted pictures of them together like a couple.

“I don’t know for sure what happened on this holiday and why Mark has apparently tried to drown her. But I have been told that Jasmine was unhappy that they have been in a relationship for a few years, and she is not named in his will.”

The source revealed that Mr Gibbon was going to leave everything to his two grandchildren, adding: “His will has caused some tension in the family.”

    Where is Alex Gibbon now?

Ms Wyld and Alex separated in 2021. Alex had worked with his father and was a director of their lighting company, Ultralight UK Limited, from 2019 until he left in 2023. That same year, he ran his father over in an £80,000 Porsche following a public argument.

In February 2024, Alex pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He also pleaded guilty to harassing Ms Wyld in the past. He was sentenced to two years in prison and given a three-year driving ban and a five-year restraining order.

Alex was released from prison six months ago and moved in with his mother, who had divorced Mr Gibbon several years prior.

A family source told the Daily Mail: “There was a big argument between Alex and his father in the street. Alex had had enough and got into his car to try and drive away, but Mark got in front of the vehicle to stop him from leaving.

“Alex shouted to him to ‘get out the way’, but Mark continued to obstruct him and was hit by the car as a result.”

Mr Gibbon remains in custody in Florida until his hearing in September.
