In the three years between Wednesday Season 1 and 2, there was a lot of mystery as to how the show would return. It's very fitting for the Jenna Ortega Netflix vehicle, given that one big mystery was at the forefront of the teen drama's hit first season. But, getting another bite of the proverbial moldy apple, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were keen to keep the questions going, only in much shorter bursts.
"For ourselves, we wanted to change up the storytelling in Season 2 a bit," Gough says in an exclusive interview with Parade, "which is to have mysteries, but not have it be one season-long whodunnit and to try to sustain that again. So we wanted to kind of have a satisfying conclusion, but then that just leads to more mystery."

Indeed, the first four episodes of Wednesday Season 2, which dropped on Netflix on Aug. 6, laid out clues and subsequently solved them in rapid fashion. Wednesday Addams's stalker, a holdover mystery from Season 1, revealed herself in Episode 2 as invisible superfan Agnes DeMille (Evie Templeton). The serial killer who was murdering with a literal murder of crows unmasked themselves in Episode 4 as Judi Spannegel (Heather Matarazzo), an executive assistant at the Willow Hill psychiatric institute. While it seems like much of the mystery was expended in the first half, it sets up for plenty more to come when the second batch drops on Sept. 3.
Read on for Parade's exclusive interview with Alfred Gough and Myles Millar, as they get into their choices behind the first half of Season 2, including giving more spotlight to the Addams Family outside of Wednesday.

Let's start with the biggest mystery of Season 1 getting addressed: The identity of Wednesday's stalker. When you created that plot point initially, did you have an idea that it would be Agnes, the invisible woman?Alfred Gough: I think that was we sort of came to that in the in the writers' room in Season 2. We had a couple ideas about where we could go with that. But we did that part partially because we had so many young fans of the show, and we were like, "What would a younger student who idolized Wednesday look like? And how annoying would Wednesday find that?" And then to have her start out as a stalker who almost kills Enid–Miles Millar: The most extreme super fan you can find. But she's actually kind of similar to Wednesday. But that was felt like a really fun idea. And obviously Evie Templeton, who plays Agnes, just killed it. So, yeah, that was great luck in terms of costing.One of the most significant changes made between Wednesday Seasons 1 and 2 is choosing to bring more of the Addams Family into the spotlight in major roles. Talk to me about that. Was that something you always wanted to do if you were given a Season 2?Gough: That was. Because Season 1, 95% of it is really Wednesday. And you got glimpses of the other characters and just the taste of the Addams Family. And that was by design, because we definitely wanted to make sure that the show was centered on Wednesday. But then, as we got into Season 2, we wanted to explore the Addams Family. Because it's a family everybody loves, but we nobody knows that much about them. There hasn't been that much lore mythology. So to be able to kind of do that in the context of the show was great. And really kind of bring up the mother-daughter relationship, and then also bring in grandmama. So you had three generations of these very formidable Addams women.Millar: And someone like Pugsley, it felt natural for him to go to the school. And he's a character, I think he hasn't been front and center before like this. And to give him the idea that he raises this zombie as he thinks it's gonna be like a pet or a dog, and actually has great ramifications, which are deadly throughout the season. We always love the idea of finding characters that have been underexplored and giving them their own stories, and sort of giving the audience who's known them a chance to know them better.From the beginning of the season, we're given this mystery of the one-eyed crow and this series of murders. I certainly expected this to be another season-long mystery like in Season 1, only for the murderer to be revealed in Episode 4. Were you aware that the season would be split into two batches, and did that impact how you handled this plot?Gough: There was an inkling that the season could be split. And we definitely wanted the first half to obviously as a big cliffhanger, but we wanted it to feel complete. And I think for ourselves, we wanted to change up the storytelling in Season 2 a bit, which is to have mysteries, but not have it be one season-long whodunnit, and to try to sustain that again. So we wanted to kind of have a satisfying conclusion, but then that just leads to more mystery.Millar: Yeah, I think it's always for us, fighting formulas so it doesn't feel repetitive. You want the show to feel the same, but be different. So there's something that each season has its own flavor. I think that's sort of, for us, important that each season feels like it's distinct.

How will Jericho change now that this rogue element is back on the loose?Gough: That's exactly right. He's a very rogue, dangerous element who's out there, who's made his intentions very clear about what he wants to do. And now Wednesday has to contend with this havoc that she's wrought.We heard a lot about Wednesday's Aunt Ophelia in Part 1. Will we be able to find out more about her story, and even possibly see herin Part 2?Millar: The breadcrumbs will definitely lead to something, yeah. It's a family member that is has been seen in the family. And so for us, what's our iteration of that? Again, it's another female member of the family, and what is that going to bring? And with Morticia, obviously, there's something. There's a history there that she's afraid of repeat with Wednesday. So we love the idea of teasing that up front and there'll definitely be a reward for those bread cards.You've spoken in interviews about how you hope to do many more seasons of Wednesday. So was Season 2 conceived with a major cliffhanger for Season 3 in mind?Gough: There'll definitely be a reason to go into Season 3. With Season 1, you never know. So we wanted it to feel complete, but also give some forward momentum into Season 2. But I think with Season 2, we had a pretty good chance that we would have a Season 3. So we definitely had that in mind when we were breaking the season.You also talked about how you have spin-offs already percolating in your head. As you're breaking these stories, is there anyone specific you're keeping in mind for a future series?Gough: Well, there were a couple. Ideally, you design these shows that anybody could have their own series. That would be that. That's kind of goal with all the characters, so that they all feel fully fleshed out. But there are a couple we're circling. We can't really say more than that right now.
