Emergency crews rescued a mother and her teenage daughter from the water at Illinois Beach State Park Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
At around 4:15 p.m., Lake County Sheriff and local fire departments responded to a report of a water emergency at the park, located at 1 Lake Front Dr., authorities said.
A mother and her 14-year-old daughter were having trouble swimming when bystanders came to their rescue, authorities said.
The woman, 30, was submerged for 5 minutes, Beach Park Fire Department said. The daughter inhaled some water but remained afloat.
Bystanders pulled the pair out of the water and performed CPR on the mother, Beach Park Fire Department said
The mother was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, Beach Park Fire Department said. The daughter was also transported to a local hospital to be checked out.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking into the incident, authorities said.
There have been four drownings and numerous rescues in the last year at Illinois Beach State Park, and officials are raising alarms.
