The 2025 NFL season is over for Los Angeles Chargers star offensive lineman Rashawn Slater before it could really get started.
This is tough news for the Chargers, who will be without their starting left tackle for this season:

— Dianna Russini (@diannarussini.bsky.social) August 7, 2025 at 5:03 PMLocal football fans might be familiar with Rashawn Slater from his days at Northwestern University. Bears fans might remember the team’s reported interest in him as a prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft.
While playing for the Wildcats, Slater earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2018 and was a first-round pick by the Chargers in 2021. Since his debut, Slater has earned PFWA All-Rookie team honors (2021), made two Pro Bowl trips (2021 and 2024), and was a second-team All-Pro (2021). The NU product’s excellence as a pro helped land him a four-year contract extension worth up to $114 million that made him the league’s highest-paid offensive lineman by average annual salary.
Former Northwestern standout offensive lineman Rashawn Slater will miss the 2025 season
As The Athletic’s Dianna Russini points out above, Rashawn Slater went down with a leg injury during Thursday’s practice and was carted off the field. It has since been revealed that Slater’s leg injury was a torn patellar tendon. The injury requires surgical repair and will cause him to miss the entire 2025 season. Slater will go on injured reserve, opening a roster spot for the Chargers. But more than anything, it opens up a gaping hole at left tackle. It’s not as if left tackles as good as Slater grow on trees or are readily available to be signed off the free agent wire in early August.
In an alternate universe, I’d wonder if the Chargers and Bears could be trade partners in the wake of the news of Rashawn Slater’s season-ending injury. But with right tackle Darnell Wright suffering an apparent injury that caused him to leave practice early on Thursday, it wouldn’t make sense for Chicago to ship off one of its offensive tackles at this time. I do not envy the Chargers one bit in this situation. Finding a left tackle to hold down the fort for one year won’t be easy. But few NFL coaches are as resourceful as Jim Harbaugh. I’m sure he will make the most out of an unfortunate situation.
