Charlotte middle school football coach accused of inappropriately touching 13-year-old student

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Charlotte-area middle school football coach has been arrested for allegedly inappropriately touching a student.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and court documents confirm that 22-year-old Shy’mere Kavon Leroy Simms, a volunteer football coach at Kennedy Middle School, was arrested on Wednesday, Aug. 6. He is charged with one count of indecent liberties with a student.

    According to court documents, the alleged incident involved a 13-year-old student and took place on August 1, 2025. Simms was formerly employed as a behavioral technician (BMT) at Alexander Graham Middle School, where the student was reportedly enrolled at the time.

    Court records state that the victim and his mother reported the incident. Evidence supporting the report was collected, including video and digital communications, police said.

    Simms was taken into custody on Wednesday, August 6, and has since posted a $30,000 bond as of Thursday, August 7. Simms was terminated in June at Alexander Graham Middle School for reasons not yet publicly released before he volunteered at Kennedy Middle, court records state.

    CMPD’s Crimes Against Children Unit is continuing its investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to call authorities at 704-432-8477.

Shymere Simms has been removed from his duties, suspended with pay, and will no longer be working at any school in the district effective immediately pending the results of the investigation.

    Shymere Simms served as a BMT “Floater” at the following schools:

    Alexander Graham Middle School  James Martin Middle School  J.M. Alexander Middle School   Walter G. Byers School Southwest Middle School West Charlotte High School

    Shymere Simms also served as a football coach at Kennedy Middle School.
