From being booed off the field to throwing an inning as perfect as perfect can be, all in about 18 hours. Pretty crazy partial day for new Chicago Cubs reliever Andrew Kittredge.
Andrew Kittredge’s immaculate inning yesterday was the first of his career, and the first Carson Kelly had ever caught (Marquee). It was only the sixth in Cubs history, per team historian Ed Hartig: Hayden Wesneski (2022), LaTroy Hawkins (2004), Lynn McGlothen (1979), Bruce Sutter (1977), and Milt Pappas (1971).

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) August 6, 2025Kittredge’s catcher didn’t know what was happening until the last moment, so I guess it’s good he didn’t call for a waste pitch at any point:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 6, 2025“Just trying to make pitches at that point,” Kittredge said of the inning, per the Tribune. “Honestly, it was kind of building off [Tuesday] night where I was not in the zone as much as I like to be and today I just kind of made it more of a conscious effort to be in the zone and it just kind of fell into place ….
“You always want to just get back out there as quick as you can … just so you don’t have to stew on it too long. Hopefully you hear more cheers than boos, but you’re going to give up runs in this game. You’re going to have success in this game, hopefully, and just try to enjoy the times where it’s going well.”
The fact that Kittredge’s previous outing had gone in such a polar opposite direction makes the immaculate inning all the more compelling, though I’d point out that there’s a lot of context here:
Cubs fans booed pitcher Andrew Kittridge out of the park on Tuesday night after surrendering three homer. He had Immaculate inning in Weds.” I feel like I deserved to be booed .It was an embarrassing performanceI know that comes with the territory.’
— Bruce Levine (@MLBBruceLevine) August 6, 2025While it’s no doubt true that Kittredge was booed as he left the mound after surrendering four runs and effectively losing the game, the booing was really a collective thing. Fans were booing the whole situation, from the severe offensive drought to the mediocre play of the last month to the disappointing Trade Deadline to the literally-historic hot streak the Brewers are on. Andrew Kittredge just happened to be the dude who presented the opportunity for directing those feelings.
I don’t expect Kittredge’s next outing to look too much like either of the last two, but if he could settle into something even remotely close to what he was at his peak a few years ago, then the Cubs have themselves another clear late-inning option, which is how he’s already been used.
