James Maddison is expected to miss the majority of the upcoming season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The Tottenham star was stretchered off in Spurs’ pre-season friendly against Newcastle on Sunday.
The midfielder featured for less than ten minutes before going down in visible pain.
“It looks like with Madders [it’s] a bad injury,” manager Thomas Frank said after the match.
Tottenham have now confirmed Maddison is set to undergo surgery before starting his recovery.
“We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee,” the club said in a statement.
They added: “His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.
“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.”
The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for most of the upcoming season.
