BECKET, Mass. — A University of Rochester lecturer died in what officials described as a freak accident at a national dance festival.
Kat Sirico, who was working as a production manager at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in western Massachusetts, lost control of theater staging platforms on a dolly. Sirico tripped, fell, and was crushed by a falling platform, according to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. The accident occurred this past Friday, and Sirico was pronounced dead at the scene.
University of Rochester staff remembered Sirico as a tireless worker and kind friend. Missy Pfohl Smith, director of UR’s Program of Dance and Movement, issued the following statement:
“Kat joined University of Rochester’s Program of Dance and Movement in December 2024. They immediately became part of our community, which is more like a family. We are still processing this terrible loss. Kat brought an enthusiastic and deep love for dance to their work, and had a vision for dance production education that we hope to uphold. They worked tirelessly with our students, faculty, and professional guest artists to bring the dances to life, and their beautiful lighting designs and the way they approached exhausting technical rehearsals with care and compassion will be remembered and cherished. Kat was a great person and kind friend, and we are mourning what could have been. Kat brought so much to our program, and left us with systems and guidelines for production that we will continue to bring into the future. We are grateful for our time with Kat, and share in Jacob’s Pillow deep grief.”
Sirico was 40 years old.
