National Night Out was serious fun for Mission Hills community ...Middle East

Neighbors in the Los Angeles Police Department Mission Community Police Station area gathered together for a National Night Out event to meet-and-greet the senior lead police officers, learn about crime prevention and safety tips.

The community-building block party, officially called National Night Out Against Crime and Drugs, also included music by DJ Bobby Arias, displays by community groups, free food and raffle prizes in Brand Park in Mission Hills.

Sponsors and supporters of the event included Los Angeles Fire Department Station 75 in Mission Hills; Mission Hills Neighborhood Council; and local elected officials State Senator Caroline Menjivar; Congresswoman Luz Rivas; the office of Assemblymember Celeste Rodriguez; and Los Angeles City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez.

National Night Out, the first Tuesday in August — Aug. 5 this year — brings law enforcement officers, emergency personnel and the public together to learn about local neighborhood crime, crime prevention tips, safety tips around home and creating neighborhood watch groups while having fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

Individual neighborhoods may put together their own block-party — inviting their senior lead police officers — to discuss how to keep their areas safer from crime.

Some cities hold their event on other dates, often coinciding with an ongoing event like an evening farmers market or San Fernando’s event in early October when the weather is cooler.
