Although details of the talks have not been released, Trump hailed the meeting as “highly productive”.

“My Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, just had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Great progress was made!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

A Kremlin aide earlier on Wednesday said Witkoff held “useful and constructive” talks with Putin on Wednesday. The two met for around three hours on a last-minute mission to seek a breakthrough in the war.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said the two sides had exchanged “signals” on the Ukraine issue and discussed the possibility of developing strategic cooperation between Moscow and Washington.

Trump and Putin could meet as early as next week

Following the meeting, the New York Times reported that Trump plans to meet in person with Putin as early as next week.

Trump then intends to hold talks with Putin and Zelensky, adding that the plans were disclosed in a call with European leaders on Wednesday.

The White House did not immediately respond to the report but earlier on Wednesday Trump acknowledged that he spoke with European leaders after Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.

While noting that “great progress” was made during the meeting, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come.”

Trump, who promised to end Russia’s war in Ukraine on “day one” during his presidential campaign, has held several phone calls with Putin and has met with Zelensky since returning to the White House in January, most notably at the Vatican for the Pope Francis’ funeral and the explosive exchange between the pair in the Oval Office.

However, in recent weeks, he has become increasingly frustrated with Moscow over a lack of progress towards ending the three-year conflict.

Following reports that Trump may meet Putin next week, the White House said the US President was open to meeting his Russian counterpart.

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was pleased with the “great progress” from the Witkoff-Putin meeting.

“The Russians expressed their desire to meet with President Trump, and the president is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky. President Trump wants this brutal war to end,” Leavitt said.

Zelensky said he discussed details of Witkoff’s meeting with Trump during a call.

Sir Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO chief Mark Rutte were among those also on the call.
