Fueled by hot, dry and windy weather, the Lee fire burning in northwestern Colorado made large runs Tuesday and is now burning across nearly 22,500 acres, up from 13,000 the day before, fire officials said.
The Lee fire, which sparked over the weekend west of Meeker, spread mainly to the east toward Colorado 13, but also made large runs to the south, the Rocky Mountain Area Complex Incident Management Team said in a morning update Wednesday.
Crews are working to protect the structures on the east side of the fire, the team said.
The nearby Elk fire, burning east of Meeker, saw less fire activity Tuesday, but still grew by about 550 acres, fire officials said. It is now estimated at about 8,304 acres.
Reduced fire activity allowed firefighters to stop the fire from moving forward on the south end along County Road 8, fire officials said. On the north and east sides of the Elk fire, crews worked to prevent the fire from crossing the Beaver Creek Drainage and protected nearby structures.
The extreme fire activity was caused by drought and two days of red flag warnings, when weather conditions elevate fire danger, officials said. Both fires were sparked by lightning.
More growth is expected for both fires Wednesday with temperatures forecast in the mid-80s to low-90s, strong winds and very low humidity levels.
“These conditions along with extremely dry vegetation will result in extreme fire behavior with large runs lasting into the evening,” fire officials wrote in Wednesday’s update.
Fire managers and local authorities will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Meeker High School to talk about the fire’s growth, weather and evacuation plans.
