Artificial intelligence (AI) is the shiny tool that the Government repeatedly wheels out to fix its most headache-inducing problems. But there is just one problem – it can sometimes make things worse.
For example, the Home Office wants to use AI to tackle the ever-growing asylum backlog, one of the biggest challenges facing the Government today.
But as The i Paper reveals, Yvette Cooper’s department is quietly rolling out a flawed ChatGPT-style tool that generated “serious errors” during its trial run, requiring some of its work to be removed entirely from the experiment last year.
The tool does not decide on asylum claims but it summarises asylum interview transcripts, which case workers would use to make a call on a claimant’s future.
In trials, one in 10 summaries was deleted because of errors or missing information. And the remaining results didn’t get glowing reviews from case workers, with almost a quarter stating that they were sceptical of the tool’s ability.
There is no doubting AI’s transformative potential, nor the need to streamline clanking government bureaucracy. But when people’s lives are at stake, every precaution should be taken.
The decision to move ahead with the asylum screening tool has drawn criticism from MPs, refugee charities and civil liberties campaigners.
All agree that something must be done to bring down the backlog. But those claiming asylum in the UK, successful or not, do not deserve to have their lives affected by a dodgy algorithm just so ministers can generate a good headline in the media.
