A new year of Chicago Bears football will officially kick off Sunday when the team squares off against the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field in the preseason lid-lifter. It is the dawning of a new era with a first-year head coach, second-year quarterback, and a bunch of fresh faces who are here to help lift this team out of its duldrums and into a competitive place.
But before we get too deep down that rabbit hole, let’s check out the first depth chart of the summer.
Kudos to Bear Report’s Zack Pearson for sharing it on Twitter/X.

SOME QUICK NOTES ON THE OFFENSE:
The Bears listing two starting tight ends made my head turn with intrigue. Despite missing as much time as he did during rookie mimicamp and OTA sessions, Colston Loveland is the only rookie projected to be in the starting lineup based on this depth chart. It feels early to say this, but it feels like Chicago’s first-round pick has a rocket strapped on his backside bsed on this first depth chart release — and his potential makes me think he can go straight to the moon. Is it just me or does is seem notable that second-year offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie is listed as the backup right tackle. Are we to read this as a sign that the left tackle competition is between incumbent starter Braxton Jones and rookie Ozzy Trapilo? Because that is how I am reading this situation. I hope Luther Burden III sees the depth chart and uses it as motivation for the rest of training camp and the team’s preseason games. Burden comes off as the type of player who will use any slight as motivation. I love rooting for players who take the field with a chip on their shoulder. Incumbent starting left tackle Braxton Jones will have to hold off upstart rookie Ozzy Trapilo in order to keep his gig with the first-team offense. | © Troy Taormina-Imagn ImagesChicago Bears Defense
DEFENSIVE END 1: Montez Sweat, Austin Booker, Daniel Hardy
DEFENSIVE TACKLE 1: Grady Jarrett, Chris Williams, Shemar Turner

WEAKSIDE LINEBACKER: T.J. Edwards, Amen Ogbongbemiga, Ruben Hyppolite II, Swayze Bozeman
MIKE LINEBACKER: Tremaine Edmunds, Noah Sewell, Carl Jones Jr., Power Echols
CORNERBACK 1: Jaylon Johnson, Nahshon Wright, Shaun Wade, Jeremiah Walker
CORNERBACK 2: Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith, Ameer Speed, Tre Flowers

SAFETY 1: Jaquan Brisker, Elijah Hicks, Major Burns
SAFETY 2: Kevin Byard III, Jonathan Owens, Alex Cook, Tysheem Johnson
SOME QUICK NOTES ON THE DEFENSE:
While Nahshon Wright has caught a buzz for his efforts in training camp leading to an extended look with the first-team defense, it is Tyrique Stevenson listed as the CB1 opposite of Jaylon Johnson. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson had some interesting commentary about Stevenson, which you should check out after you’re done reading this post on the Bears depth chart. No rookies are on the first or second team defense in this release of the depth chart. Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen and his staff will be developing first-year players from the bottom of the depth chart. The abundance of rookies could make the second half of preseason games worth watching as first-year players angle for more playing time. I like that cornerback Kyler Gordon is listed as a “DB” because it makes his role on the defense seem mysterious. Who knows what his defensive coordinator has planned for him in Week 1, but I look forward to seeing what it looks like. Chicago Bears nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon flips out at Soldier Field. SOME QUICK NOTES ON THE SPECIAL TEAMS
No surprises here. The Bears’ special teams unit is pretty locked in right now. What a relief. The only thing that might constitute as a surprise is that wide receiver Tyler Scott isn’t listed among the returners. Neither is JP Richardson, for that matter. I thought that could be a role where someone boosts their stock. Maybe they still will get a chance in that capacity at some point in the summer.
