Two occupants of a city bus were injured, one gravely, in an accident on the 163 freeway through University Heights on Tuesday morning.
A Metropolitan Transit System bus crashed off the freeway north of Washington Street for unknown reasons at about 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue, which said that one of the injured people was in “CPR status,” and the other was suffering from non-life-threatening trauma.
“Shortly after 9:02 a.m. crews responded to reports of a bus that had crashed into the right-hand shoulder on the southbound SR-163. Crews were able to access and open the bus door to access the bus driver and passengers at approximately 9:17 a.m.,” said a statement from the department.
“Two individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, one in acute condition and the other with non-life-threatening injuries.”
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department then turned the scene over to the California Highway Patrol.
The cause of the accident, which left the University Avenue onramp to northbound SR-163 closed through late morning, remains under investigation.
