SAN DIEGO – Point Loma resident Glenn Millar has been a children’s book author, a start-up entrepreneur, a marketing and brand strategist, ran a social adventures club for an online dating service, is a living kidney donor, and an inspirational speaker.
But now he’s found his true calling, as the self-employed founder and chief executive officer of Call Glenn Again Handyman and Home Services.
“Great service with all the fixings” is the motto for Call Glenn Again, a licensed and bonded contractor specializing in handyman services, which Millar currently runs out of his home. Millar started the company as a part-time side job in 2019. Since then, it has grown into a multi-million-dollar general contracting business with thousands of clients.
Call Glenn Again handles a wide-variety of work, including electrical such as light switches, outlets, ceiling fans, and lights; light plumbing such as faucets, toilets, and garbage disposals; sheetrock wall repair and painting; television wall mounting; Ring doorbells and security lights; gutter cleaning and repair; shelf mounting; door adjustment, fencing; flooring; hanging artwork, screen repair, and bathroom, and kitchen remodels.
There’s even an interesting tale behind Millar’s catchy business name. “I’m engaged to a professional namer,” he said of Alexandra Watkins, his fiancée, who is a leading authority on brand names, having served high-profile clients from Amazon to Xerox.
“The second most famous thing she ever named was Call Glenn Again,” joked Millar. “It’s a brilliant name.”
Millar admitted, however, “I didn’t like the name at first. When she first told me, my first thought was, ‘Is that because I didn’t do it right the first time?’”
Millar had no idea his initial foray into being a handyman was going to evolve into a career. “I thought this was going to be a one-time thing,” said Millar. “Like people call you, and then they call you again five years later.”
Watkins and Millar met in San Francisco and moved together to San Diego, where she is from. He said they have mutually determined that Point Loma is now their forever home.
“We’re in the best small town in America that happens to be located in the middle of the eighth-largest city in the country,” said Millar. “We know everybody. We’re both part of the community. I have never been happier in my life.
“We originally moved here until we retired, and then we were going to go someplace cheaper. They’re going to bury me in the backyard because I am never leaving.”
Of his approach to business, Millar said: “I know how to build businesses. That’s what I do. And I just happen to know how to fix some things because I learned along the way.”
Millar tells the story of his initiation into the handyman trade. “I was working in the backyard having a great time and somebody asked me, ‘Do you do sheetrock (building material)?’”
Millar replied, “‘I can do that.”
“Then someone asked, ‘Can you hang a ceiling fan for me?’ I said, ‘I can do that.’ And the phone started to ring – and it never stopped. Today, we have 18 people.”
Millar started out focusing mainly on “small work,” but has since expanded into being a remodeling contractor.
“We still do all the same work we used to,” he said. “We will never give that up because it creates a community and a customer base that likes us and trusts us.”
Millar estimated that about 70% of his work is still done within the Peninsula, though he’s willing to work outside that area.
What’s the most satisfying thing about being a handyman?
“I like keeping customers happy,” replied Millar. “I like being part of the community. I love running a company, building a brand. I love the fact that people know our name. I love coming up with new ideas and expanding the business. We provide trust and peace of mind. That’s what they (customers) are buying.”
Handyman rates at Call Glenn Again start at $80 per hour with a $32 trip charge. Electric, plumbing, and telecommunications work costs $95 per hour with a $32 trip charge. For larger jobs, Millar noted his company gives free estimates and bids the job in advance.
“We will always tell you when a job is not appropriate for us, and then recommend a specialist who can do a great job for you if we cannot,” Millar said.
