RUSSELL Wilson is the newest starting quarterback in New York, but fans might not be convinced he’s the guy for the job.
Wilson showed up at WWE SummerSlam on Sunday and didn’t get the reaction he was probably expecting.
During breaks in the action, WWE cameras go around the stadium to point out celebrity guests.
Among them was Wilson, who stood with a custom New York Giants championship belt.
While he was thrilled to be watching SummerSlam in MetLife Stadium, his new home, fans didn’t share the same excitement.
A chorus of boos came raining down from the stadium, nearly drowning out the announcers’ commentary.
Many fans concluded that the stadium must have been filled with more New York Jets fans, and shared their thoughts on social media.
“Pro Jets crowd,” one fan said.
“Giants fans just warming him up for the season,” another fan said.
“Looks like half the stadium is from out of town or cowboys/eagles fans,” a third fan said.
“A lots of jets fans,” a fourth fan said.
“He’s use to it. Hence why he’s smiling from ear to ear. Giants should ask for a refund,” a fifth fan said.
While fans haven’t quite come around on Wilson, the Giants are thrilled with the impact he’s making.
Head coach Brian Daboll revealed how much Wilson has already affected star wide receiver Malik Nabers.
“I think he’s had a very positive impact on Malik,” Daboll said.
“They have a good relationship, they spend a lot of time in the meeting room, and then they spend time outside just in terms of body maintenance, how Russ takes care of his body, the things he’s done to have a long career.
“He’s kind of grabbed hold of that, asks a lot of questions, he’s very involved.
“Talking about Malik in the meetings, communicative. I know you see a lot of the plays that he makes out on the field.
“But the thing I’m most proud of is the growth he’s made as an individual in the meeting rooms, outside the building.
“And I think Russ has had a big impact on that as well. He’s one of our best players, in terms of Malik.”
The Giants open their season on the road against the Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys.
Wilson’s first chance to wow his home fans is in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
