Police say Omar Derow was identified as the suspect and say he used an unknown open flame device to start the fire, which ultimately destroyed the building.
On Feb. 19, 2025, police say they arrested Derow in a stolen Kia on Troup Street. At the time, police say he was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the third-degree and arson in the third-degree for the fire.
Police say Derow didn’t show up for court on his charges and warrants were issued for his arrest. He was arrested on Aug. 1 on all the warrants, police say.
At the time of the fire, about 150 firefighters responded. One firefighter injured his ankle while battling the fire.
The Rochester Fire Department said one of the building’s walls collapsed due to the fire, which made it difficult for firefighters to get close to the building and battle the fire.
